1780 - 1792
The Age of the Patriots
The Age of the Patriots, spanning from 1780 to 1792, was a time of significant revolutions that set the stage for the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. The Patriots, disenchanted with the absolute rule of Stadtholder William V, Prince of Orange, sought democracy. Their ideals were fueled by Enlightenment thoughts and democratic movements in France. Clashes between the Patriots and the Orangists, who supported William V, were frequent. Although many Patriot-led revolts were suppressed by military forces, notably those from Austria under the Habsburgs, their efforts were not in vain. They sparked the Batavian Revolution, ultimately leading to the fall of the Dutch Republic. The Age of the Patriots was inspired by the revolutionary ideas of the Enlightment. However, the American Revolutionary Wars inspired the Dutch Republic, and they were compassionate with the American cause, raising feelings of democracy and, subsequently, patriotism.

The Age of the French
The Age of the French was a time period when France held control over much of Europe. Fueled by Enlightenment ideals, patriotism, and the quest for democracy, this era saw revolutions that sparked the French Revolutionary Wars and later the Napoleonic Wars. Napoleon Bonaparte rose to power, successfully challenging alliances with nations like Great Britain, Prussia, and Austria. Although eventually defeated, Napoleon's reign brought significant shifts in democracy, governance, and political structures in the world. Tensions rose after patriotic movements sparked feelings of inequality and dissatisfaction with governance. In France, Enlightenment ideas and democratic principles gained traction, leading to further revolutions. This culminated in the Revolutionary Wars and eventually Napoleon's rule over Europe.

The Age of Nationalism
Following the Congress of Vienna, which sought to reinstate pre-Napoleonic borders and politics, various nationalist movements emerged with the goal of uniting states and territories into single nations. This period saw numerous revolutions and struggles for independence, alongside efforts to merge smaller states into larger entities. Countries such as Italy gained independence, while Germany unified its territories into the German Confederation and, later on, the German Empire. The Age of Nationalism began with the Revolution Year of 1848, also known as the Springtime of Nations. The revolutions originated in France and later spread to the German States, the Austrian Empire, Italy, and Hungary. These movements were characterized by large-scale demonstrations, the formation of temporary governments, and calls for increased political freedoms.
